We have been paddling a few times a week in Amsterdam since 9 December. We make a tour through the canals on Tuesdays or Wednesdays and we paddle up and down the Amstel river with Canoe association Zeeburg on Saturdays. Just after we started kayaking at this association, we were lucky to see the beautiful Amsterdam Light Tour (click here for a short movie clip).
New Year’s arrived quickly and during a polar bear plunge (‘nieuwjaarsduik’) at the club, we went for a cold dive with our kayaks. This was the first time the three of us were in the cold water, that was only three degrees. This was a great time to start and practice things like rescuing each other because the water would only become warmer from now on. We continued practicing related skills in the swimming pool, where the water temperature was much more comfortable.
Our first experience on sea was in the Dutch province Zeeland with an instructor in mid-March. We practiced various skills on the waves, such as surfing, towing, but also navigating and planning trips. We agreed at the end of this long but incredible weekend: the more you know, the less you know. We still have a lot to do before we can begin our journey!
